La referencia literaria para el tema representado en este primer ejemplo de aceite flamenco sobre cobre fue el autor clásico Aeneid de Virgil. El infernal “paisaje del casco” se inspiró en pinturas ejecutadas por el padre del artista, Jan Brueghel el Viejo, quien a su vez había mirado hacia Hieronymus Bosch.
