Esta es una repetición inacabada, reducida en tamaño y mucho simplificada, de la famosa Grande Odalisque de 1814 (Musée du Louvre, París), una concubina imaginada en un harén del Medio Oriente. La pintura fue central en la concepción de Ingres de la belleza ideal, y su influencia fue reforzada por su longevidad: Ingres continuó pintando desnudos como este tan tarde como los 1860, por el cual había entrenado a cientos de seguidores. Las pinturas en tonos grises —en grisaille— solían establecer variaciones en el tono como guía para grabadores de impresiones reproductivas negras y blancas, pero el propósito previsto de este trabajo sigue siendo incierto.
