Emma Dobigny, uno de los modelos favoritos de Corot, posando en el garbo griego, se dice que ha inspirado esta figura melancolía. El título de la obra puede referirse a la heroína del poema de Byron Don Juan, o a una de las mujeres amadas por el Conde de Monte-Cristo en la novela homónima de Alexandre Dumas. Como alternativa, ya que Corot tenía una pasión por la música, puede referirse a la heroína de la ópera Haydée de Auber o el Secreto.
