Vuillard disfrutó de un acercamiento cercano con varios de sus clientes. En los años 1890 fue amigo de Thadée y Misia Natanson, pero después de divorciarse en 1904, cambió su apego al concesionario de arte Jos Hessel y su esposa, Lucie, que recibieron al artista cada noche a las seis.
