Vuillard compartió varios apartamentos en París con su madre. Después de que Madame Vuillard se retiró de su negocio de hacer corsé en 1898, la artista dejó de representarla en el trabajo pero la mostró a tiempo libre, leyendo el papel, jugando con sus nietos, recibiendo invitados, o, como aquí, en una comida. Madame Vuillard permaneció la musa principal de su hijo hasta su muerte en 1928.
