Mosnier era un retratista favorecido en la corte francesa, que trabajaba tanto en marfil como en lienzo; después de la Revolución Francesa, dirigió una vida itinerante, moviéndose primero a Londres y después Hamburgo y San Petersburgo. El traje en el que está representado Luis XVI es idéntico al usado en una miniatura de él atribuido Antoine Callet (1741-1823) fechada 1787, también en la colección de The Met.
