Inscripción sobre el pedestal: RENDUE A LA LIBERTÉ ET A L’ÉGALITÉ PAR LA CONVENCIÓN NATIONALE DU 16 PLUVIOSE DEUXIÈME DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE UNE ET INDIVISIBLE2. Este busto evoca la abolición de la esclavitud por decreto del 4 de febrero de 1794. Fue inspirado por una notable fuente que Houdon exhibió en el Salón de 1783, y que el Duc d’Orléans puso en su jardín, el actual Parc Monceau. Presentaba una representación de tamaño natural de un joven sirviente negro (hecha de plomo y pintado negro) que derramaba agua de una torre de bronce gilt sobre una joven mujer de baño (hecha de mármol blanco).
