La pintura animal era un género distinto y bien respetado en Francia del siglo XVIII, donde la caza era una actividad central en la vida aristocrática. Oudry, el principal pintor animal del siglo, exhibió este lienzo y el cercano Dog Guarding Dead Game en el Salón de 1753. Mientras no se concibieron como colgantes, los dos fueron colgados por Ange Laurent de La Live de Jully, un importante coleccionista en el desarrollo de lo que todavía se consideraba una idea novedosa en París del siglo XVIII: patrocinio de pintores franceses contemporáneos.
