Después de trabajar varios años en Francia, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot se embarcó para Ital en 1825. Vista desde los Jardines Farnese, Roma fue creada en 1826, junto con dos pinturas conocidas en el Louvre, el Coliseo de los Jardines Farneses y el Foro de los Jardines Farnese. Corot hizo visitas frecuentes al Cerro Palatino, donde dedicó unas quince sesiones de pintura a los tres estudios, trabajando en el boceto de Phillips por la mañana, luego dirigiendo su atención al Coliseo al mediodía y al Foro por la tarde. Para Duncan Phillips, fue la “distinción especial de Corot que combina lo mejor en el naturalismo y el clasicismo”. Por esta razón era un vínculo seminal entre el arte pasado y el arte moderno.
