Esta pintura parece haberse inspirado en el poema de Victor Hugo de 1827 “La Douleur du pacha” (La Grief de Pasha). En el poema, un potentato otomano ficticio desafía sus responsabilidades, incluyendo sus dominios y sus súbditos, debido a la tristeza implacable: “¿Qué tiene de malo este pasha, a quien la guerra llama / Y quién, triste y soñado, llora como una mujer? Su tigre Nubian ha muerto. ”
