Blanche Selwyn comenzó su carrera en British Vaudeville pero pronto emigró a los EE.UU. donde tuvo un gran éxito como impersonador masculino. En 1873 Selwyn se casó con su segundo marido y compañero de negocios, Ben Gilfoil. A finales de los años 1870, Selwyn poseía y administraba su propia empresa de variedad. Las audiencias amaban la parodia de Gilfoil sobre la impersonación masculina de Selwyn.
