Sorolla entró en contacto con el arte griego en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia. En esta pintura, la esclava descrita es reminiscencia de la Venus griega, una iconografía que se volvería de moda en los salones franceses de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Por otra parte, su postura de crestfallen y su triste rostro recuerdan el famoso grabado de Albert Dürer titulado Melancholy I (1514). Esta pintura es también notable por el control anatómico de la figura, el fondo oscuro que contrasta con los blancos de la piel, la vida de flores y pétalos en la parte inferior, y la alusión a la arqueología griega, uno del pintor
