A los diecisiete años, la familia Torres-García emigró a Cataluña, España donde comenzó a estudiar pintura, e incluso trabajó con Gaudi en las catedrales de la Sagrada Familia y Palma de Mallorca. En 1904 publicó un artículo en la revista Universitat Catalana que decía que el arte nunca debe copiar la realidad, revelando su concepto idealizado de arte. En 1910 organizó el pabellón uruguayo en la Feria Mundial, y finalmente regresó a su país natal.
