Un ejemplo sorprendentemente ambicioso de retrato grupal, la pintura de John Durand (1731-1805) de los cuatro niños Rapalje, escionas de una rica familia mercantil de Manhattan, se considera uno de los mejores ejemplos de pintura colonial en América. De fórmulas anteriores para el retrato de grupo, la pintura de Durand carece de un paisaje de fondo y por lo tanto simplifica la composición y unifica el grupo de figuras.
