Manchester, originalmente llamado Manastoh y luego Rocky Ridge, se encuentra en la orilla sur del río James. Manchester fue incorporado como una ciudad en 1769 y una ciudad en 1874. Tenía un puerto activo que transportaba tabaco, carbón y esclavizados. Manchester era también una comunidad de molinos y fabricación y centro ferroviario. Para 1870, Manchester era políticamente importante como sede del condado de Chesterfield, pero no creció. En 1910 Manchester se unió con la ciudad de Richmond. Uno de los padres fundadores de Manchester fue John Murchie (1750-1831), nativo de Escocia que emigró a Virginia en 1768, el año que ganó lotes de Manchester en la lotería de William Byrd III. Fue uno de los cuatro fideicomisarios de la ciudad de Rocky Ridge y un fideicomisario de la Academia de Manchester formado en 1807.
