Según la mitología griega, Hylas era el hermoso hijo del rey Thiodomus. Herakles (Hércules), después de matar al Rey, tomó a Hylas como su sirviente y amante. Se unieron a los Argonauts, liderados por Jason, en su búsqueda de la Fleece Dorada. Cuando su barco fue forzado a hacer para la tierra, Hylas se fue a tierra para buscar agua en una fuente. Las ninfas de la fuente (o naiads) le creyeron tan hermoso que lo metieron en el agua para que siempre pudiera vivir con ellos. La inscripción en griego que Gibson chiselled en el mármol traduce como
