Durante el verano de 1884, Twachtman —entonces estudiando en la Académie Julian, en París— aprendió una casa con su familia en Arques-la-Bataille, en Normandía, y se centró en capturar la tranquila belleza de la zona sobre lienzo. En esta obra retrató el borde del Béthune, un tributario de los Arques, bordeado por una franja de cañas y flores de prado. En su estudio de París el invierno siguiente, Twachtman transpuso este dibujo naturalista en el monumental lienzo Arques-la-Bataille, a la vista cercana.
