El sitter estaba casado con Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816), un famoso dramaturgo y miembro del Parlamento. En este retrato, mostrado en la Real Academia en 1797, ella golpea una pose teatral con el pretexto de un trabajador rural que lleva a su hijo Charles sobre su hombro. Este tipo de retrato se basó en la imagen idealizada de la pobreza rural que se había convertido en una forma de juego de roles para el público de Londres.
