En un viaje a Japón con Henry Adams en 1886, La Farge enlistó acuarela —el medio familiar del artista itinerante— para crear estudios para ilustraciones y para pintar hojas para exposiciones. Ejecutó esta composición audaz y monumental después de su regreso a Nueva York, utilizando un dibujo acuarela realizado durante sus viajes, así como fotografías que él y Adams habían tomado. El Daibutsu, o Gran Buda, un molde de bronce de 50 pies de alto en 1252, es reconocido por su tamaño colosal, su demeanor pacífico, y su sitio inusual en el aire abierto rodeado de montañas y árboles.
