Cuando La Farge pintó flores en aceite durante los años 1860, prefirió capturar su esencia en lugar de perseguir la precisión científica. Las magníficas acuarelas florales que pintó en los años 1880 recuerdan sus aceites anteriores, pero su color rico habla su dominio del medio acuarela y su vitalidad decorativa refleja sus experimentos en vidrio manchado. Un crítico astuto comentó: "Sus flores no tienen verdad botánica, pero se queman con amor y belleza."
