Con Louis Comfort Tiffany, John La Farge fue un pionero en el diseño de gafas manchadas en los Estados Unidos. La acuarela era especialmente adecuada para desarrollar los diseños porque la transparencia del medio podía sugerir los brillantes tonos gemlike del vidrio. Autumn Scattering Leaves, una representación alegórica de la temporada, fue creada originalmente como una propuesta de ventana de cristal manchado para una casa privada en Long Island.
