Abbeville había sido uno de los lugares favoritos de Ruskin desde su primera visita en el tour continental de 1835. Admiró especialmente el estilo gótico tardío en evidencia en la iglesia de St Wulfran: en 1848 había visitado Salisbury poco antes de viajar a Abbeville, y fue golpeado por el contraste entre la severidad del inglés primitivo y la “luz riqueza” del porche de San Wulfran. Su muestra esta imagen junto con varios otros en su conferencia “La Arquitectura Flamboyant del Valle del Somme”, dada en la Institución Real el 29 de enero de 1869.
