En 1840/1841 los Ruskins realizan un recorrido por Francia, Italia y Suiza. Después de pasar la mayor parte de diciembre en Roma llegan a Nápoles el 9 de enero de 1841 y permanecen hasta el 25 de febrero. En su diario por este tiempo Ruskin guarda un registro detallado de sus viajes dentro y alrededor de Nápoles y hace mención frecuente de Vesubio. Sus primeras impresiones de Nápoles se señalan en su entrada de diario del 10 de febrero
