En su recorrido por 1838 los Ruskins extendieron su ruta normal hacia Escocia para explorar la tierra de Sir Walter Scott. La fecha en este dibujo choca con la secuencia del itinerario de John James Ruskin, y es la única evidencia de que la familia regresó a Edimburgo: Rosslyn está a pocos kilómetros al sur. Este y el estudio de la Abadía de Melrose son excepcionalmente más grandes que cualquier otro de los dibujos de Ruskin 1838 o 1837.
