En 1800 Robert Shurlock (1772-1847) se casó con la hija de John Russell, Henrietta Ann Jane Russell (1775-1849), cerca de la casa del artista en Guildford, Surrey. Este pastel probablemente se completó poco después del matrimonio, y el retrato compañero de Henrietta con el primer hijo de la pareja también está en esta galería. Aquí el Sr. Shurlock es un hombre desgarrador a la altura de su juventud, usando una bufanda de cuello de seda y un abrigo de doble pecho con botones de latón. El artista ejecutó otros retratos para la familia de su hija, todos los que datan de 1801.
