En el Courbet de 1860 comenzó a pintar escenas de desnudos eróticos, incluyendo representaciones de genitales femeninos, mujeres desnudas en poses eróticas, y esta pintura, representando el lesbianismo. Courbet ganó mucha notoriedad por sus desnudos eróticos, que mostró junto a escenas de caza, asegurando una venta y una reputación. Le Sommeil fue encargado por el diplomático turco Khalil Bey, quien también encargó El Origen del Mundo, para incluir su colección privada de pinturas eróticas. Esta pintura en particular fue también parte de un informe policial en 1872 cuando un distribuidor de pintura celebró en ella una exposición. No se permitió que se exhibiera públicamente hasta 1988.
