Uno de los principales hombres en Pensilvania colonial, Thomas Mifflin (1744–1800) más tarde se convirtió en gobernador del estado y miembro de la legislatura. Durante la Guerra Revolucionaria, sirvió con Trumbull como ayudante del campamento al general George Washington. Trumbull pintó este retrato en miniatura al mismo tiempo que el ejemplo casi idéntico en la colección de Yale University Art Gallery. Trumbull usó los retratos en miniatura para las representaciones de Mifflin en dos de sus principales pinturas de historia, "La muerte del general Mercer en la batalla de Princeton" y "La Resignación del general Washington" (tanto la Galería de Arte de la Universidad de Yale, New Haven, Conn.).
