Esta vista panorámica circular de Versalles fue pintada en Kingston, Nueva York y Nueva York entre 1818 y 1819. Vanderlyn utilizó numerosos bocetos (Senate House Museum, Kingston, Nueva York) que había hecho en Versalles en 1814. La perspectiva fue cuidadosamente ajustada a la forma circular. La pintura fue originalmente diseñada para ser exhibida en la Rotunda construida por Vanderlyn en 1818 en la esquina noreste del City Hall Park en Nueva York. Su demostración no fue tan exitosa como lo había deseado Vanderlyn. En busca de algunos beneficios, Vanderlyn recorrió intermitentemente con el panorama hasta su muerte. El artista se retrató señalando al Zar Alejandro I y al rey Federico Guillermo II de Prusia a la derecha de la Cuenca de Latone.
