Entre todas las grandes maravillas escénicas del Nuevo Mundo, uno era más alto en las mentes de los americanos del siglo XIX: Niagara Falls. Primero visitados por exploradores europeos a finales del siglo XVII, las dos grandes cataratas (hoy conocidas como las Cataratas Americanas y las Caídas de Caballo) habían llegado a simbolizar para muchos estadounidenses el poder y la vitalidad de su nueva nación.
