Joseph Marx (1772-1840) emigró a América desde Hannover, Alemania, en los años 1790 con su viuda madre, Frances (1750-1819). En Nueva York, Marx se casó con Richea Myers (1769-1838), la hija de Myer Myers platero. La familia Marx se estableció en Richmond, Virginia, y residía en las calles 6 y Cary. Produjeron diez niños sobrevivientes entre 1795 y 1812. La familia Marx extendida pertenecía a la Congregación Beth Shalome y era prominente en la comunidad judía de Richmond que ha florecido desde el siglo XVIII.
