El pintor de formación clásica Joseph Anton Koch fue una figura paterna para muchos artistas de habla alemana que visitaron Roma a principios del siglo XIX. Renovó el género de la heroica pintura paisajística, que había sido establecido por los maestros franceses del siglo XVII Claude Lorrain y Nicolas Poussin. La fama de Koch descansa en esta imagen icónica, a la que se refirió como un “paisaje griego”. Es la cuarta y última versión de una composición que pintó por primera vez en 1805 (Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe).
