Como prolífico retrato itinerante en el valle del río Connecticut, Stock mantuvo una revista de sus actividades diarias, grabando que pintó más de novecientos trabajos entre 1832 y 1846. Desde la edad de once años, Stock fue paralizado desde la cintura hacia abajo. Fue capaz de viajar en años posteriores con la ayuda de una silla de ruedas especialmente diseñada. Se cree que los niños que se ven aquí son los del hermano menor del artista, Isaac C. Stock, y cuñada, Sarah Hunt Stock, de Springfield, Massachusetts. Pintar sus súbditos a toda su extensión, el artista empleó piezas coloridas en un interior detallado que contiene elementos planos, abstractos que son atractivos al ojo moderno.
