Un juego de dados de soldados se interrumpe cuando una sirvienta acusa al apóstol Pedro de ser discípulo de Cristo. Miedo a las consecuencias, Pedro niega a su Señor. El español Ribera fue el protagonista más importante del nuevo naturalismo después de la muerte de Caravaggio en 1610, y este es el trabajo que más impresionó contemporáneos, incluyendo Valentin. Aquí, el sagrado y el profano existen lado a lado. Ribera contrasta figuras absorbidas en su juego con otro que mira fuera de la imagen, haciendo que el espectador complicit. El hombre calvo con un beret minúsculo modelado también para otros artistas.
