Lydia Escher (1858-1891), hija del importante político y empresario Alfred Escher, estaba casada con Emil Welti, hijo del Consejo Federal Suizo, médico y amigo de la infancia de Stauffer. La pintura fue pintada en julio de 1886 (ver inv. 571 e inv. 1285); Stauffer la llevó a Berlín y trató de añadir un oleandro, entre otras cosas. Tres años después de la creación de este cuadro, pintado de blanco en blanco, una técnica particularmente apreciada en ese momento, tuvo lugar un drama de clase media superior entre el pintor y el modelo. Con los activos que le dejaron después del divorcio, Lydia estableció la Fundación Gottfried Keller, que fue capaz de asumir la función de una fundación nacional para la adquisición de obras de arte suizas.
