Ivan Albright pintó este exuberante retrato para la adaptación cinematográfica ganadora de Oscar Wilde de 1891 novela The Picture of Dorian Gray. En la historia de Wilde, Dorian Gray se encarga de un retrato de sí mismo como un joven atractivo y luego intercambia su alma por una apariencia siempre feliz.
