Magritte pintó dos de estas pinturas con el mismo nombre, La condición humana, la más conocida de las cuales es la versión pintada en 1935. Un tema recurrente en las obras de Magritte ilustra un objeto que está cubriendo lo que está detrás de él. En esta pintura, el caballete utilizado para pintar el paisaje fuera de la puerta también esconde la puerta, así como el paisaje marino. La imagen pintada sobre el lienzo también se fusiona con la imagen real fuera de la puerta, haciendo una transición perfecta entre los dos.
