Creado en el mismo año que su muerte, El sueño fue la última pintura de Rousseau, que fue debutada sólo unos meses antes de su muerte intemporal. En su debut, Guillaume Apollinaire, refiriéndose a las críticas negativas de años anteriores, exclamó que este año, no habría ridiculismo, ya que la pintura exudía pura belleza. Con esta pieza, Rousseau reunió a lo exótico y lo ordinario, la selva y el sofá, y combinó los dos para formar una yuxtaposición de composición que involucra e intriga. Tal vez es apropiado que esta era su última pintura antes de su muerte, como era su obra maestra.
