Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial Inglaterra ofreció refugio a miles de víctimas políticas y raciales del régimen nazi. Fleeing Alemania en 1936, Schwitters buscó refugio en Noruega, pero cuando los nazis invadieron escapó a Inglaterra. Fue internado durante diecisiete meses como ciudadano alemán, primero en Edimburgo y luego en Hutchinson Camp en Douglas en la Isla del Hombre. Este fue un período muy creativo para Schwitters, como en el primer campamento se encontró rodeado de otros intelectuales y artistas, y el intercambio de ideas lo inspiró enormemente. Produjo pinturas abstractas y figurativas, incluyendo retratos de la gente que conoció. El tema de esta pintura fue identificado como Georg Heller por otro interno en la apertura de la exposición Schwitters en el Tate en 1985.
