El tema de Lhermitte a menudo incluía campesinos y vida agraria, reflejando su experiencia como juventud. A lo largo de su carrera, creó composiciones llenas de luz en la tradición Barbizon y fue profundamente influenciado por Jean François Millet. Sus obras reforzaron la dignidad de la vida rural en Francia a finales del siglo XIX. El artista logró éxito crítico en el Salón oficial que comenzó en los años 1860.
