Lan Ying, también conocido por su nombre de cortesía Tianshu y los nombres literarios Diesou y Mierda, nació en Qiantang, provincia de Zhejiang. Era un hábil pintor de paisajes. Su estilo era elegante y liso durante sus primeros años, libre, grande, peculiar e insofisticado en su edad media después de viajar extensamente por todo el país, y vigoroso, robusto pero ligeramente vistoso durante sus últimos días. Lan también era bueno en figuras de pintura, flores, aves, orquídeas y bambús. Fue un importante exponente de la “Escuela Blanca de Pintura” (wulinpai).
