La iglesia muy grande de Santa Maria Novella fue la primera iglesia importante e independiente en estilo verdaderamente italiano. Su construcción comenzó en alrededor de 1246 para la Orden Dominicana. Las fechas exactas de las diversas partes de la iglesia son todavía polémicas, pero sin duda tomó mucho tiempo construirla. La nave no comenzó hasta 1279, y la fachada, iniciada en 1310, no terminó hasta 1470. Sin embargo, el interior y el plan lo convierten en la iglesia más importante de su fecha.
