Sólo después de fallar en su búsqueda de una carrera gubernamental Li Fangying se dedicó a pintar como un medio de supervivencia. Su amor por la flor de ciruela era tal que él nombró a su estudio la Torre de la Flor de Plum; estaba allí, en 1743, que pintó esta imagen de su flor favorita junto con el bambú y una roca. Para Li y estudiosos fallidos como él, la flor de ciruela que florece a pesar del frío de invierno proporcionó un poderoso modelo de perseverancia.
