Mandla, hasta mediados del siglo XVIII, fue el centro del reino de Garha-Mandla (una dinastía Rajput-Gond) y se encuentra lejos al este del teatro general de la guerra. La ciudad y su gran fuerte estaban bien protegidos en una curva afilada a lo largo del río Narmada. En abril de 1818, el celo británico hacia la toma de Mandla fue motivado por el hecho de que, el mes anterior, el asesino del fuerte había intentado traición (aunque sin éxito) matar a un oficial británico que viajaba bajo una bandera de tregua. Los británicos llegaron a Mandla el 18 de abril de 1818 y con considerable dificultad construyeron baterías de asedio a través del río frente al fuerte. Para el 26 de abril habían dañado severamente las paredes del fuerte antes de montar lo que resultó ser una redada tormentosa en el bajo, durante la cual 500 de los defensores fueron asesinados. Mandla rápidamente se rindió después.
