Durante la campaña británica para reducir el país del Maratha Oriental, Chanda (hoy conocido como Chandrapur) llegó a la prominencia como el mayor bastión en la región de Nagpur todavía en manos de Maratha. Con paredes de más de 6 millas en circunferencia, se encuentra cerca de la confluencia de los ríos Erai y Zarpat. El 21 de mayo de 1818, el Teniente Coronel William Adams autorizó un plan especialmente atrevido para forzar el fuerte, que fue ejecutado sólo con mucha dificultad, ya que los defensores estaban bien preparados. Sin embargo, la fortaleza pronto fue superada y con ella los británicos casi habían aplastado la resistencia efectiva en las regiones orientales.
