El abanico de Liu Deliu pintado en una gama estrecha de colores retrata una ardilla precariamente suspendida entre su objetivo, una uva suculenta, y su curiosidad por las intenciones de un insecto que ha iluminado este objeto. La vivacidad de este tema tiene un encanto obvio. En su inscripción Liu dice que está trabajando en el estilo de Lu Shouping (Lu Zhi, 1496–1576), un artista de Ming reconocido por sus observaciones sensibles transpuesto en bocetos de tinta de flores y aves. Utilizando la animación, el color sutil y un formato decorativo, Liu transforma un tema de interés para los académicos desde que el Yuan se convierte en una imagen popular.
