Esta obra se realizó en el espíritu de Ribera (1590-1652) bajo el cual Luca Giordano estudió durante cinco años. Puede ser la figura de Euclid, desprendida de bienes mundanos, típica del estilo de la pintura que prevalece en Nápoles en ese momento, o simplemente un filósofo de la mendicidad. Sea cual sea el caso, esta figura de un hombre es sorprendente: está marcando sus obras y mostrándonoslas en un último intento de persuasión. Al mismo tiempo; la botella de vino en su cinturón y la expresión en sus ojos muestran a un hombre perdido para beber.
