Este retrato es un ala de un tríptico desmantelado en el que las pinturas de un hombre y una mujer flanquearon un panel central perdido, quizás representando a la Virgen y al Niño. La joven y bien vestida niñera parece ofrecer una oración silenciosa mientras cuenta las cuentas del rosario en su mano izquierda. El anillo del hombre, llevando los escudos de armas de dos familias holandesas aristocráticas, sugiere que vino de Holanda. Cranach probablemente pintó este retrato durante su visita allí en 1508.
