Lucas Cranach y su taller produjeron muchos retratos impresos y pintados de Martin Luther, con los que el artista estaba bien conocido. En este pequeño panel, el Reformador se muestra de cerca, en perfil de tres cuartos, con los distintivos vestigios protestantes negros. El cuadro probablemente se unió con un retrato de Philipp Melanchthon, un teólogo, líder intelectual de la Reforma, y el principal colaborador de Luther. Varias versiones sobrevivientes indican que el emparejamiento disfrutó de una amplia circulación. La pintura actual, que muestra cierta rigidez de la fórmula, debe considerarse una repetición del taller de Cranach.
