Anguissola, a quien este retrato se ha atribuido recientemente, fue probablemente entrenado por su hermana mayor Sofonisba Anguissola, una retratista de renombre internacional. El tratamiento de la forma y el manejo de la pintura son similares al retrato de Lucía de su hermana menor, Europa, y a un autorretrato de 1557. Tales retratos a pequeña escala sobre el cobre fueron apreciados registros de seres queridos y populares entre la élite europea antes de que los soportes de marfil se hicieron comunes en el 1700 y la fotografía en el 1800.
