Este aceite de cobre, hecho para el cardenal Benedetto Giustiniani, epitomiza el estilo maduro de Ludovico: la pose de la Virgen evoca los sibillos de Miguel Ángel en la Capilla Sixtina, mientras que las elegantes curvas resonan con las figuras de Parmigianino. Ludovico rindió homenaje a los grandes artistas del siglo anterior. San Bernardo, diplomático incansable para el Papa del siglo XII Innocent II, aparece en blanco contra un coro de compañeros santos, incluyendo Pedro, Andrés, Pablo y Catalina de Alejandría.
